My healthy plate

In the Solomon Islands we recommend food for the day to include:

  • 25% body building foods [proteins] — lean meat, fish, chicken, eggs, dried beans, nuts and milk
  • 25% energy foods [carbohydrates] — rice, bread, locally grown root crops like yam, cassava, taro, sweet potato
  • 50% protective foods [fruits and vegetables] — 2 fruits and 5 vegetables — locally grown fruit and vegetable like leafy greens, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, papaya, ripe bananas.

We produce this from our home sup sup gardens, our bush gardens, our lagoons and the sea. We cook it for our families using the recipes in Heiti Kaikai Cookbook.

Good kaikai builds healthy bodies and minds. We become what we eat.

Try these recipes. They offer different tastes using the plants in our gardens. Combining them to include body building, energy and protective foods we have a mixed diet that supports healthy families.
